Florida State Fired Mike Norvell on Sunday, and Its President Says the Clemson Loss Was the 'Defining Moment' (Jacksonville Watch News)

Florida State is looking for a new head football coach. The university fired Mike Norvell on Sunday, a decision President Richard McCullough said he made because the continued losses became too hard to ignore, ESPN reported in a November 2 file read via search by the Sports Desk in this supplemental pass. Saturday's 36-24 home loss to Clemson - the game this desk filed as SQ-20261031-078 - dropped the Seminoles to 3-5, and McCullough said at a Sunday news conference in Tallahassee that the loss was a “defining moment” for him: “I just did not see that trajectory.”

The numbers behind the decision run in both directions. Norvell went 41-39 in seven seasons, with the high point in 2023 - a 13-0 ACC championship season that the College Football Playoff committee left out of the four-team playoff after quarterback Jordan Travis was injured. Florida State is 10-22 since the start of 2024, including 3-5 this season and 1-4 in the ACC, and has not beaten Clemson, Miami or Florida since the 2023 season. The administration had given him one more shot after a 5-7 season last year, hoping to avoid a buyout ESPN put at $50.3 million; NBC Sports put the buyout at roughly $47 million, 85 percent of his remaining salary on a contract running through 2031.

The change is wider than one office. Defensive coordinator Tony White and safeties coach Evan Cooper were also fired; linebackers coach Ernie Sims will serve as interim defensive coordinator and offensive coordinator Tim Harris Jr. will call the plays. Director of scouting Rick Stockstill - a former Florida State quarterback who was head coach at Middle Tennessee for 18 seasons - serves as interim head coach, and the school said its search for a full-time coach begins immediately, with a search firm hired and the searches for an athletic director and a head coach running simultaneously, ESPN reported. Interim athletic director Bruce Warwick said Norvell left the room to a standing ovation.

What is left of the season is immediate: Florida State plays at Boston College on Saturday in Stockstill's first game, and at 3-5 the Seminoles must win three of their final four to reach bowl eligibility, according to the FSU Wire account the desk's research read this cycle. A program that was 13-0 three seasons ago is now being rebuilt in November - the biggest Florida college football story of the year, filed here as the supplemental Sports file for this cycle.
