Floods Swamp the Arid Southwest, Forcing Evacuations and Altering Election Day Plans in Arizona, Colorado and New Mexico
Floodwater across the desert Southwest killed a 73-year-old man in Flagstaff, brought a statewide emergency declaration in Arizona, sent evacuation alerts to about 20,000 people in New Mexico's San Juan County - and moved at least one Colorado voting centre the day before the midterms.

The same storm system flooding Florida's east-central coast has a western twin, and the Associated Press summarized it in a single line on November 2: floods swamp the arid Southwest, forcing evacuations and altering Election Day plans. CNN's evening update, read by the Politics Desk this run, filled in the human ledger: in Flagstaff, Arizona, a 73-year-old man identified as Williams Singavarapu was found dead early Monday after reportedly falling into floodwater on Sunday evening, Flagstaff Police said, and Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs declared a statewide state of emergency on Monday.
The water's reach is measured in rivers that rarely make flood copy: more than 10 rivers, creeks and washes in Arizona and southwest Colorado passed major flood stage, some at record crests, CNN reported. In San Juan County, New Mexico, about 20,000 people received alerts to evacuate within half a mile of the Animas, La Plata and San Juan rivers, county spokesperson Devin Neeley told CNN.
Election Day is inside the flood map, but - so far - holding. A Pagosa Springs, Colorado voting centre and ballot drop box were relocated, in a Colorado Secretary of State release issued Sunday; New Mexico polling locations will open as planned on Tuesday, a spokesperson told CNN; and officials in Arizona's Coconino and Yavapai counties were not expecting major Election Day disruptions as of Monday afternoon. Those are officials' expectations on Monday, reported as such - Tuesday's weather will grade them.
For Jacksonville the story runs through the national door: it is the western half of an Election Day eve on which weather is rewriting voting logistics in two regions at once - Florida's Brevard County relocations are filed separately at SQ-20261102-066 - while Duval County's own Election Day arrangements stand unchanged (SQ-20261102-067).
