Brevard Flood Rescues Pass 100 People, and the Water Moves Seven Election Day Polling Places in Brevard County

The east-central Florida flood emergency turned into a rescue operation and then an Election Day problem on Monday: sheriff's deputies helped more than 100 people caught in rising water, wildlife officers rescued 60 more, and Brevard's elections supervisor relocated seven precincts for Tuesday's vote.

Brevard Flood Rescues Pass 100 People, and the Water Moves Seven Election Day Polling Places in Brevard County (Jacksonville Watch News)

The numbers from Brevard County describe a day spent pulling people out of the water. Sheriff's deputies helped more than 100 people caught in rising water while driving, Florida Fish and Wildlife officers rescued 60, airboats pulled at least seven residents from the Wingate subdivision in West Melbourne, and three Florida Tech students were rescued from a flooded retention pond off Babcock Street in Melbourne - the third airlifted by an FWC helicopter - Florida Today reported on November 2 in an evening file read by the Florida Desk this run. The National Weather Service called the rainfall a one-in-a-1,000-year event, the report said.

The water itself set records: 20 inches fell in 24 hours across southeast Palm Bay, Grant-Valkaria and Malabar, with 15 to 20 inches across south Brevard, Florida Today reported, citing Emergency Operations Director John Scott, who expected waters to recede as the rain tapered Monday evening. The Flash Flood Emergency was expired and reduced to a Flash Flood Warning, Weather.com reported, and no flood deaths had been reported as of Monday afternoon, Florida's Morning News Network reported - a line this story prints exactly as sourced.

Then the flood reached the ballot. Brevard Supervisor of Elections Tim Bobanic is relocating precincts for Tuesday, November 3, Florida Today reported: precincts 307, 512 and 525 move from the Max K. Rodes Community Center in West Melbourne to New Shiloh Christian Center at 3900 Sarno Road in Melbourne, and precinct 309 moves from the Veterans Memorial Complex to the same New Shiloh site; precincts 306, 323 and 509 move to the Joseph N. Davis Community Center at 2547 Bruce D. Buggs Street in Melbourne; and precinct 517 moves from Faith Baptist Church of Palm Bay to Palm Bay City Hall Council Chambers at 120 Malabar Road SE. More changes are possible, the report said, and Brevard voters should check VoteBrevard.gov. Brevard schools, closed Monday, will also be closed Tuesday.

This is the evening chapter of the emergency this desk filed at SQ-20261102-059 (the governor's seven-county declaration) - rescues, a warning downgrade, and a voting map redrawn by water the night before Election Day. Jacksonville and Duval County are not in the flood area; Duval's own Election Day arrangements are unchanged and are filed separately (SQ-20261102-067).
