Palm Beach County Asks DeSantis to Declare an Emergency After the Learjet Crash, With Hundreds Still Displaced
Palm Beach County Administrator Joe Abruzzo said Monday he has asked Gov. Ron DeSantis to approve an executive order declaring a state of emergency after Sunday's Learjet crash, making the county eligible for funds to help displaced residents and nearby businesses - and officials still do not know when hundreds of evacuees can go home.

The Palm Beach County crash story is now a displacement story. County Administrator Joe Abruzzo said Monday that he has asked Gov. Ron DeSantis to approve an executive order declaring a state of emergency, making the county eligible for funds to help support displaced residents and nearby businesses, the Palm Beach Post reported in its live crash file on November 2, read via search by the Florida Desk in this supplemental pass. “We recognize that this area may be closed for quite a bit of time,” Abruzzo said, adding that “there's evidence everywhere.”
The human count underneath the request: about 100 homes near the crash site in Greenacres have been evacuated, and County Commissioner Joel Flores estimated between 400 and 600 people have been displaced, the Post reported. The Red Cross is coordinating care for them at the Greenacres Community Center, and Flores said the county is looking into hotel vouchers for displaced residents and PalmTran bus vouchers for those whose cars were crushed by debris. Abruzzo said there are no safety concerns regarding the area, but the mobile home park remains closed off so federal investigators can keep collecting debris and evidence.
Two timelines officials would not give on Monday: there is no date for when evacuees can return, and no timeline to reopen the closed stretch of Military Trail - that waits on the NTSB finishing, repairs, and a structural inspection, the Post's live file reported. The desk's earlier files carry the crash itself and Monday's NTSB briefing, at which investigators said evidence indicates parts of the plane broke off before it crashed and killed all nine people aboard (SQ-20261102-041).
This is the Florida Desk's supplemental state file for the cycle: a county government asking the governor for emergency powers and money, on the record, for Florida residents put out of their homes by the state's worst aviation disaster of the year. The desk will file the governor's answer when it comes.
