Early Voting Nears 50 Million as the Midterm Campaign Enters Its Final Weekend

The campaign for control of Congress reached its final weekend with early voting at a midterm record. More than 49 million Americans had already cast ballots, in person or by mail, according to University of Florida Election Lab figures reported by Reuters — up from nearly 46 million who voted before Election Day in the last midterms, in 2022. All 435 seats in the U.S. House and 35 seats in the Senate are on Tuesday's ballot, and a Democratic victory in one or both chambers could reshape the final two years of President Donald Trump's term, Reuters reported.

The final weekend also brought a sharper federal role in one close Senate race. Reuters reported the Trump administration stepped up its legal intervention in Alaska on Friday, as the Justice Department accelerated a criminal investigation into allegations that aides to a Democratic Senate candidate recruited a retired schoolteacher to run under a name nearly identical to the Republican incumbent, Sen. Dan Sullivan. Trump is not scheduled to travel on Saturday, Reuters reported, and returns to the campaign trail Sunday in Kansas and Iowa.

In Jacksonville, the final weekend is a voting weekend. Duval County early voting runs through Sunday, Nov. 1, with sites open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, according to the county schedules published this week. Early voting ends today in St. Johns County, where sites are open 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and in Clay County. Polls reopen statewide on Election Day, Tuesday, Nov. 3.
