South Florida's defense owned Saturday in Tampa. The Bulls beat UAB 30-10 at Raymond James Stadium, improving to 6-2 overall and 2-2 in the American and clinching bowl eligibility for the fourth straight season, USF Athletics reported.

Defensive end C.J. Hicks tied the USF single-game record with four sacks, a mark he now shares with George Selvie and Shurron Pierson. Two of Hicks's sacks forced fumbles that teammates returned for touchdowns — Asani Redwood's scoop-and-score gave USF a 17-10 halftime lead, and Grayson Howard's 13-yard return in the fourth quarter made it 27-10. The Bulls finished with season highs of six sacks and 11 tackles for loss and held UAB to 17 rushing yards and 177 total yards.

USF trailed 10-0 early after UAB scored on its opening drive, and starting quarterback Michael Van Buren Jr. left the game with an injury in the second quarter. Sophomore Luke Kromenhoek sparked a 30-0 scoring run, running for a career-best 92 yards, and kicker Nico Gramatica went 3-for-3 on field goals. USF plays at East Carolina on Friday, November 6, on ESPN2.
