Family of Teen Killed in February Apartment Shooting Sues the Complex's Owners, Alleging Years of Security Failures
The family of Patrick Hurlburt, 19, filed a wrongful-death lawsuit in Duval County this week against five companies tied to the Broward Road apartment complex where he was shot in February, alleging inadequate security contributed to his death.

The family of a Jacksonville teenager killed earlier this year is suing the companies connected to his apartment complex, alleging that inadequate security contributed to his death. The shooting happened February 13, 2026, at The Marley at Trout River Apartments on Broward Road, according to police. The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said officers found Patrick Hurlburt, 19, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds; he was taken to a hospital in life-threatening condition and died six days later. Investigators said several unidentified suspects tried to rob Hurlburt's apartment, and at the time the Sheriff's Office said detectives had not determined how the suspects entered or whether they knew Hurlburt.
The wrongful-death lawsuit was filed October 27 in Duval County against five companies tied to the complex's ownership and management: Broward Road Owner LLC, Broward Road JV LLC, Federal Capital Partners LLC, Springer Capital LLC and Cushman & Wakefield of Florida LLC, according to First Coast News, which reported the filing on October 30. The defendants have not been found liable; the claims in the complaint are allegations, and this report attributes them to the filing.
The complaint says the Sheriff's Office responded to the property more than 1,900 times between January 1, 2021, and February 12, 2026, and that those calls included five reports of someone being shot, 22 incidents involving gunfire and 35 calls related to armed disputes, assaults, suspicious people or other weapon-related disturbances, according to the lawsuit as reported by First Coast News. A call for service does not necessarily mean a crime occurred, and First Coast News reported it is working to confirm the figures with the Sheriff's Office. The Sheriff's Office has not publicly identified any suspects in the information provided to First Coast News.
