Officers Shoot a Man Who Opened Fire at a Northside Jacksonville Apartment Complex, the Sheriff's Office Says
A call about gunshots at the Levi at River City apartments on Broxton Bay Drive ended with officers shooting a 38-year-old resident who, the Sheriff's Office said, pulled a gun at the top of a stairwell and turned toward them. He was in life-threatening condition at the briefing - the 15th person shot by Jacksonville officers this year.

Jacksonville's unsettling Sunday ended with one more shooting - this one by police. Officers responding to a call about gunfire at an apartment complex on the Northside shot a man who pulled a gun on them at the top of a stairwell, the Florida Times-Union reported in a file opened and read directly by the desk this run, carrying the Sheriff's Office briefing by Undersheriff Mark Romano.
It began with a call to police about 6 p.m. Sunday to the Levi at River City apartments in the 13000 block of Broxton Bay Drive near Airport Center Drive; the caller said somebody was shooting a gun in the complex, the report states. Romano said officers made contact with the caller at her front door, and as they were speaking with her, they were startled by six more loud gunshots. The suspect then came around the corner from a dark area; an officer asked if he was doing the shooting, and he ignored officers and started walking up the stairs, Romano said. He continued to disregard commands to get his hands up and get on the ground, and when he got to the top of the second floor, he pulled out a gun, Romano said. He did not comply with further demands to drop the weapon and was shot when he turned toward the officers.
The man was in life-threatening condition at the time of the briefing, the report states. No name has been released; Romano said he is 38 and lives at the complex. Officers were not clear on what he was shooting at or why. 'We don't know why he was doing what he was doing,' Romano said, and he also said he does not know whether the caller knew the man. Sheriff T.K. Waters said it was a scary night for the residents there: 'Unfortunately you don't feel real secure when there's a guy out there randomly firing shots in your apartment complex, but that threat is now over, it's stopped and they can rest assured we'll come running when they need us,' Waters said, in the Times-Union's account.
The shooting closed a 24 hours the sheriff himself called disappointing: earlier Sunday, two people - a 17-year-old girl and a 20-year-old man - were killed and 11 others hurt in shootings at two Halloween parties, the desk's published file SQ-20261101-040. The police shooting marks the 15th suspect shot by Jacksonville officers this year, nine fatally, according to Times-Union records - nearly the exact same numbers as when officers shot their 15th person on Nov. 1, 2025, with 10 of those fatal; that year ended with 17 police shootings, 11 of them fatal, the report states. The desk reports the man's condition only as officials stated it at the briefing, and no name, because none has been released.
